Quick Thinking!

As part of a unit on dealing with bullying, bothering, and teasing, we're learning the "Boomerang Theory" in second grade. That means that if we "throw out" kindness, most people will throw it back to us. If we throw out trouble and bother people a lot, they'll have a tendency to throw trouble back to us. In other words, one good way to keep from being bothered in the first place is to be nice.... what goes around comes around! Well, after reading a story about a very annoying mouse who continually teases a cat and almost gets devoured at the end, I asked the children what we could learn from the story.    Hands went up and students made good points such as "Be nice if you want to have friends", "Treat people the way you want to be treated", etc. But my favorite comment came from a well-behaved boy sitting on the front row. With a straight face, he said, "A mouse who teases a cat becomes an entree." The teacher's eyes widened and she firmly nodded her head as we looked at each other and burst out laughing!
