Because some of our schools are used as voting precincts, our students had election day off. This took place on a Tuesday during the first week of November. On Wednesday, one of my frequent (and favorite) visitors came to see me. I asked him whether he'd enjoyed his break from school on the previous day. With a sideways grin, he said, "Yea, I really love Veterinarian's Day!" Translation: He thought election day was Veteran's Day, which he'd been hearing about because it was coming up the following week. Since vet is an abbreviation for both veteran and veterinarian, he called his day off Veterinarian's Day!
